280. AAP's Sanjay Singh booked for 'insulting' national flag

VARANASI: On the complaint of Bhartiya Janata Party activists Lanka police on Tuesday registered a case against Aam Adami Party leaders including its national spokesman Sanjay Singh and workers under section 2/3 Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act for allegedly insulting national flag apart from section 147 and 323 of IPC.

 
BJP activists had given the complaint to Lanka police following their clash with AAP leaders and workers in Nevada area on Monday. On the basis of complaint of AAP police had already lodged an FIR against five BJP activists including a corporator Vinit Singh on Monday under section 147, 336 and 352 of IPC.

According to station officer Lanka Sanjiv Mishra, on the complaint given by BJP's Deepak Rai, a party's divisional unit president, an FIR was lodged against AAP leaders including Sanjay Singh, Sanjiv Singh (east UP convenor), Chhotu Kanojia, Sandeep Singh, Shyam Babu Kanojia and over 12 unidentified persons. This case was registered for alleged insult of national flag, rioting and manhandling. Before it the BJP men were booked for rioting and manhandling on the complaint of AAP.

 
On Monday the city had hosted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal to take part in the birth anniversary celebration of Sant Ravidas at Ravidas temple in Seer Gowardhanpur area. Modi also attended Banaras Hindu University's 98th convocation before leaving Varanasi around 1 pm. When Modi was leaving BHU campus by his chopper the motorcade of Kejriwal escorted by hundreds of AAP leaders and supporters was passing through Nevada area to reach Ravidas temple.


In the meantime the AAP and BJP supporters had clashed on some issue when AAP leaders alleged that the BJP activists also pelted stones on Kejriwal's vehicle. Situation normalized there following the intervention of police. Later, Kejriwal also left the city for Delhi in the evening. After end of his visit AAP activists reached Lanka police station with their complaint. Police lodged their case immediately. The BJP workers also gave their complaint to the police in the evening. But, police registered a case against AAP leaders and supporters on Tuesday.
