A18. BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF HARBANS SINGH JALAL
(From the pen of Dr. Karnail Singh)
Harbans Singh Jalal was born in the village of
Jalal in Nabha state. His father's name was
Meher Singh and his grandfather's name was Samal
Singh and his mother's name was Chand Kaur. He
was born in the village of Nanke, in the village
of Dhilwanwala in the British Raj, in the
district of Ferozepur.
Political situation
The village of Dhilwanwala was situated on the
junction of three states. State of Faridkot,
State of Nabha and English State. Therefore,
this village fell victim to the tyranny of three
states. In these days the independence movement
was in full swing and the ruler was also
fighting his last battle. That is why the
freedom fighters were being brutally persecuted.
Any state which wanted to expel the
revolutionaries from their country (province)
would beat them and throw them on this trio.
There used to be a pond. Often these
revolutionaries spent the cold winter nights on
the pond without clothes and without food.
Jalal's grandfather S. Kishan Singh was the
Nambardar of the village and Sahib was the
owner. He often provided much needed support to
these militants who were hiding from their
British rulers. He considered it his duty to
take them to a safe place without food and
clothing. Mostly they were given shelter for a
few days with S. Nazar Singh Bhagta or S. Jagraj
Singh Kesarwala or Sukhanand. When they
recovered, they sought refuge.
When Kishan Singh's only son passed away, he
began to feel very weak. For a long time this
service was performed by Jalal Sahib's father
Meher Singh. Former President of India Giani
Zail Singh was twice expelled from Faridkot
state and landed here on cold nights. Mehr Singh
also received the honor of his guest Nawazi.
Although all this was being done in a very
secret way, it could not be hidden from the
British intelligence police.
At that time there was a police outpost in Jalal
village, in charge of which was Ek Khan Sahib,
who kept a close watch on the activities of Mehr
Singh. It was during these days that Mr. Ajmer
Singh, a friend of Mr. Jangir Singh, a neighbor
of Mr. Meher Singh, from village Koir Singh Wala,
came to visit Mr. Jangir Singh. Ajmer Singh had
a license for a 12 bore gun. After drinking and
eating, they would go to sleep outside the
house. Mr. Jangir Singh wanted to shoot a gun
while crossing the street, but Mr. Ajmer Singh
was refusing him. Hearing the noise, a kind old
man came from his room to give them advice.
Suddenly a shot was fired. The good old man was
shot. Jangir Singh's housewife asked Mehar Singh
to find out. Jangir Singh ran away, never to
appear again. Khan Sahib first blamed Meher
Singh for betraying Jangir Singh. However, when
Jangir Singh did not appear, the case for
Khanapuri was shifted to Mehar Singh. The
Mahajan community of Mandi Rampura pleaded with
Maharaj Nabha to acquit Mehr Singh of his
innocence. Maharaja Nabha accepted this and
ordered the release of Mehr Singh, but the
British government reconsidered and sentenced
Mehr Singh to death on the basis of intelligence
reports. Jalal was one year old at the time.
Early life
Mr. Jalal received his early education at a
primary school in his village Jalal, which
looked like a kicker by the side of a pond.
Jalal's grandfather donated the building to the
school. Jalal did not have the same mind in
studies. He did not want to go to the flowers
for the exam, but Master Devi Dayal took the
flowers to him to complete the count. There was
a strange spectacle. While he was entering the
examination room with other children, a devotee
from here, Bibi Paro, who was often harassed by
school children, came to him. Bibi placed her
hands on Jalal's head and blessed him and gave
him a packet of ryuris found in his pocket by
one of his devotees. This small incident proved
to be a great boon for Jalal.
Leaning towards socialism
Jalal completed his further education at
Government High School, Pato Hira Singh. It was
here that he bought books on Communism,
Socialism published in English, Punjabi and
Hindi from Punjab Book Depot Chandigarh with the
inspiration of Comrade Bhur Bajinder Singh alias
Bhura.
For higher studies, Jalal enrolled at DM
College, Moga. English professor KL Kapoor was a
source of inspiration for him. Here Jalal had
the opportunity to study Karl Marx and Socialism
Theology in full. But the study of Lenin and
Stalin changed Jalal's view. He did not see any
difference between communist dictatorship and
monarchical dictatorship. A few incidents
inspired Jalal to study religion.
Religious consciousness
To compare Sikhism with other religions, Jalal
has published about 10,000 books on Sikhism,
Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Lautshe,
Confucius, as well as Nature, Psychology and
Philosophy. Were taken. He was repeatedly called
by the Sikh Student Federation to give a
discourse
against communism.
Due to Jalal's composure and religious
consciousness, she became close to Baba Ishar
Singh, Sant Narain Singh Nanakshar, Sah Mastana
Ji Dera Sirsa, Sri Dhosho of Pune, Maharishi
Maheshyogi of Rishikesh, Harbhajan Singh Yogi
etc. He also wrote two books in English in Los
Angeles. "Nature, the Origin of Religion" and
"Natural Way to Enlightenment"
Political life
Jalal Sahib has been very close to Giani Zail
Singh Ji. Giani ji was the President of Punjab
Congress at that time. They had no means of
transportation. Jalal dedicated his car to Giani
ji and remained with him as a driver till he
became the Chief Minister of Punjab. He was made
the convener of the Patiala division of the
Kishan cell of the Congress at an early age.
Jalal contested in 1972 against Master Babu
Singh, a joint Communist and Congress candidate,
as an independent. In a three-cornered battle
out of fifty thousand votes, a lead of six and a
half thousand was given. The cost was only seven
thousand. Fifteen thousand were donated by
friends and relatives. Sant Fateh Singh and S.
Dhanna Singh Gulshan had also given their
support at the last moment, so he had respect
for Sant Ji in his mind, which did not please
Mr. Badal.
In the 1977 elections, however, the ticket went
to Karak Jalal, the sitting MLA. But the Badal
group backed the communist candidate. Despite
this, a lead of 2,000 votes was obtained.
Suddenly, 4,000 fake postal votes were used as
an excuse to favor the Communist candidate, and
Jalal was declared green. Although justice was
served in the election petition, it was of no
avail as the Badal government had collapsed
after only two and a half years.
In the Central Government
Jalal Sahib was considered to be a good speaker
in the Vidhan Sabha for his fact-based views.
His research was based on detective journalism.
He raised a number of issues in the Assembly,
including the heavy water being produced in
Bhakra and its secret supply to Russia. In 1977,
Murarji Desai became the Prime Minister. Barnala
was the Agriculture Minister. On the
recommendation of Barnala Sahib, Jalal Sahib was
appointed a member of the Agriculture Price
Commission. Impressed by his research-based
submission, the Desai government appointed him
director of the Indian Agricultural Research
Institute, Pusa. At that time it controlled 64
agricultural universities in India.
Social service
By this time Mr. Parkash Singh Badal had become
the President of the Akali Dal. Although Jalal's
in-laws had two or three kinships with the Badal
family in Dabwali Transport, they did not think
of rejoining the Akali Dal and asked for a
ticket, keeping in mind Badal Sahib's first
attitude. But the farmers were always on the
lookout for the interests. Jalal Sahib fought a
case against this injustice in the High Court
and the Supreme Court when the Election
Commission prematurely imposed a code of conduct
on the reforms issued by the Bhattal government
related to farmers and development. OPIC, a
US-based foreign industry organization, has been
surveyed for industry in India and several
projects have been approved. It is not
appropriate to give details of all their social
service practices here.
Honest politics
Jalal remained in active politics for about 10
years. At no time did he receive a single penny
of interest from any employer for any work. Get
those people to resign themselves in a matter of
minutes. He did not fight with his brother for
personal gain like today.
Victims of rogue royalty
During Jalal's second election, Maluka Sahib
also played a pivotal role against Jalal, in the
protests by the Badal group, which caught
Badal's eye. Badal became CM. The looters used
this time to loot Jalal's property worth
hundreds of crores of rupees. It is not
appropriate to give full details here.
